Anyone in danger of mistaking director Daniel Barnz's film Beastly for a horror movie because of its title needs only to listen to a small portion of the background score by composer Marcelo Zarvos (whose recent efforts include The Good Shepherd ... Full Description and Brooklyn's Finest). On the contrary, Beastly is a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and the bulk of Zarvos' score is warm, contemplative orchestral music, appropriate to a teenage romantic drama with a supernatural edge. The film also has an extensive pop/rock soundtrack (there is a separate album for those songs), and Zarvos occasionally dovetails with such sounds, notably on the cue "High School." He also underlines the more threatening moments, such as "The Curse, Pt. 1" and "Hunter Rescues Lindy," with appropriately lively passages. But for the most part, this is calm, elegant music to support the story's romance. ~ William Ruhlmann
